Michael's traffic videos is beefy resource – you should put aside at least two evenings to go through it.
As you can expect from a beefy collection, it covers a fair number of topics.
On the landing page of the site, the visitor is promised that the videos will provide "insider secrets, exploited only by a handful of elite
marketers who capitalize on rich veins of free traffic."
This may be a somewhat optimistic statement. I would not claim to be a online marketing expert, but in the couple of years that I've been responsible for the management of corporate websites, I kept an eye on what's being written about direct marketing, guerrilla marketing (which
ups the scale of aggressive and creative marketing techniques) and spend quite a bit of time surfing Web 2.0. As a result, I've come across a fair number of the techniques described in the videos.
Don't get me wrong: I'm not saying that Michael does not deliver on his promises. On the contrary, I think he's quite good.
I just feel that my expectations was raised a bit too high by the "insider secrets" promise.
This series will provide you with a good solid foundation on:
- writing press releases and articles
- how to approach affiliate traffic
- social networking that leads to repeat traffic
- building email lists and how to get going with viral marketing
- how to plan for search engine optimisation and build sensible link programmes
Don't get too excited about the videos about blogging though. They are essentially howto guides that will help you to install, configure and use WordPress. The headline promised so much! So I was quite peeved when it did nothing more than show how to do the stuff that's my bread and butter anyway. Bother.
These how-to's are quite handy if you need them, it's just not what I expected them to be.
If I could make one suggestion, it would be to make it clear from the outset who the intended audience for this series is.
Can I recommend Michael's Traffic Videos?
If you're new in the world of online marketing, yes definitely. I'll give it 8 out of 10.
If you've been around, if your Technorati faves include everything from Seth to Gerry to Jared's blogs, maybe not.
